Brazilian Runs Shenzhen Beauty Salons
MANY see opportunity in Shenzhen. Some see property as a good investment, others see their startup expanding in the city, Thailis Naves, 28, sees opportunity under the arms of Chinese women.
Naves’ hair removal salon is capitalizing on Chinese women embracing the Western practice of removing body hair. Naves’ business, Candy Girl, performs hair removal services, including waxing and laser removal, which removes hair permanently.
“Most of my clients were foreigners at the beginning," said Naves, who is originally from Brazil. “But we are growing a lot among the Chinese girls. They are more open to a Western fashion style.”
“[Chinese women] go to the beach and they see how the Western girls look,” said Naves. “They have so many questions… they just don’t know,” Naves said.
Naves said one woman asked if she could still get pregnant after having hair removed.
“I started four years ago in an apartment,” said Naves about the Futian Candy Girl she opened in 2012. “I had clients coming from Bao’an or Shekou, all the way to Futian, so I opened a location near Window of the World.”
The Candy Girl in Window of the World looks almost clinical with clean white surfaces and a table for customers to lie on.
Candy Girl most recently opened a salon in Guangzhou.
Naves worked as a model and has spent about eight years in China, having lived in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. But she decided to start her business in Shenzhen.
“I saw there were a lot of opportunities, so I decided to start Candy Girl here," she said.
But Naves said her business isn’t just about looking good. She sees it as a way to help women.
“It’s not only about being pretty. We are already pretty," she said. “Every beauty salon is a sort of therapy center… talking to the girls is the best part of the job.”
